Mattel's Ask Matty Q&A - February 2010
Our good buddy Matty from MattyCollector.com stops by AFC to answer your burning Mattel questions from the world of Masters of the Universe Classics, DC, WWE and Avatar. Why is Optikk the first New Adventures of He-Man figure? Will the DC 3 3/4 inch line continue? Will we see WWE Classics? And just how are those toys from that low-budget Summer movie flop Avatar doing? <sarcasm> All the answers await you in AFC's February edition of Ask Matty!
AFC: Why was Optikk chosen to be the first New Adventures of He-Man figure and not a more "known" character like He-Man himself, Skeletor, Flogg, or Sebrian?
Matty: This was totally a case of fan demand. Optikk came up a lot in NA fan polls. Plus we didn’t want to kick off with He-Man or Skeletor as doing the NA versions of them would be great refreshes for the quarterly bonus figures. We already did a refresh of He-Man in 2010 (Battle Armor) and have a Skeletor refresh in the wings for later this year. We wanted our first monthly NA figure to be a fan demanded original character. See, we do read the polls!
AFC: Will the 3 3/4 inch DC line continue into 2010 and if so, will any other lines see 3 3/4 inch status?
Matty: Yes, Infinite Heroes will continue, but no new plans to announce quite yet. Although we do have a second wave of Avatar 3 ¾ on the way for both Na’vi and RDA characters.
AFC: Considering the enormous success of the Avatar movie, how are the toys doing in comparison?
Matty: Very well. As stated before, a second wave of 3 ¾ figures are heading your way soon!
AFC: Has there been any further consideration for a build a figure type of promotion for the MOTUC line? (doesn't necessarily have to be an actual figure, maybe an accessory)
Matty: The Collect and Connect figures are something that works at retail when we want to encourage fans to buy across a wave. As MOTUC figures are released as a single figure per month, there isn’t the wave “connection” that works for Collect and Connect bonuses. That doesn’t mean we won’t have other ways of getting larger figures out.
AFC: Will there eventually be a "classics" line added to the new WWE lineup?
Matty: Yes! Look for lots of classic Superstars to pop up this year including several that have not seen toy form in a long time!
